As a tutor I offer:
-Relaxed sessions, meaning no watching the clock. We start at 2, for example, and we go for as many hours as you need. Within reason, I do have a day job and a social life.
-No lectures, no facts to regurgitate. We will talk about the concepts like two medical professionals. You will speak the language of medicine and nursing in our sessions.
-Individualized session. If you feel that you want more on Pharmacology and Neuro, then that is what we will do.
-Badgering from your tutor. If you tell me you answered Question A with Answer A because checking the heart rate is important. I will drag the correct rationale from your lungs and then I'll make you coffee.
-Study plans, we'll figure out the best way for you to study when you're alone and make up a schedule leading up to the boards.
-We will cover the new format questions as well and the new NCLEX test plan that is now in effect.
My philosophy on the NCLEX exam:
Yes, it's a bear of a test and hopefully you will only do it once. The best way to study, once you have completed nursing school is to hit the question books (Lippincott is my favorite) with a vengeance. You will learn not only from your right answers but your incorrect ones as well. The rationales are there for a reason, you should be able to articulate why you answered, "check a pulse" rather than, "check an EKG."
You cannot relearn nursing school in the time leading up to your exam. You cannot learn every medication or lab value. You cannot learn every sign and symptom because eventually every patient is nauseous and subsequently vomiting. A Graduate Nurse has to focus on the Pearls, the unique symptom or medication side effect that shines bright from the question. The Pearls are those items that fill in the blank of the following sentence. If the patient has _____ then it's always_____. I can help you find those.
You're not a professional teacher, Heather, how can you help me? Right, I am not a Master degree teacher, but I am a Registered Nurse and I am an Expert Registered Nurse in my field. Currently, I work in Pre-op and Post-op Care for both adults and pediatrics. I have 12 years experience in Med/Surg, Cardiac, and ICU.
I am skilled at taking standardize tests. (I'm the student you hate, barely studied for the boards, but passed first try.) I understand the way the questions are worded and what you need to look for to answer them correctly. I'd love helping you to do the same.
Lastly,
I find that many students will go their own way for the first exam and even the second exam before they contact a tutor. If you are any bit unsure about your studying please contact a tutor, any tutor. I think the Kaplan way is okay, but most people benefit more from one on one turoring. Do the math, I bet I'm cheaper. My hourly rate in $40 dollars and hour.
